Introduction

Biodiversity hotspots are regions that are both rich in biodiversity and endemic species, but also significantly threatened by human activities. The concept of biodiversity hotspots was first introduced by Norman Myers in 1988 to identify regions that should receive priority for conservation. To qualify as a biodiversity hotspot, a region must meet two criteria:

  1. It must contain at least 1,500 species of vascular plants as endemics (species found nowhere else on Earth).
  2. It must have lost at least 70% of its original habitat.

Biodiversity hotspots are crucial for conservation because they:

  • Harbor a high number of endemic species, which are not found anywhere else.

  • The Himalayas are known for their altitudinal biodiversity, ranging from tropical to alpine ecosystems.
  • Home to several endangered species, such as the snow leopard, red panda, and Himalayan tahr.

  • The Western Ghats are recognized as one of the world’s eight “hottest hotspots” of biodiversity.
  • Home to over 7,400 species of flowering plants, 139 mammal species, 508 bird species, 179 amphibian species, and 6,000 insect species, many of which are endemic.
  • Critical source of freshwater for peninsular India.

3. Indo-Burma

Location: This hotspot extends across northeastern India, including the states of Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, and parts of Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh.

  • Known for its extraordinary diversity of freshwater turtles, several of which are endangered.
  • Rich in plant species with a high degree of endemism, including numerous orchids and medicinal plants.
  • Contains unique ecosystems such as tropical rainforests, swamps, and mangroves.

Threats:

  • Slash-and-burn agriculture leading to habitat loss.
  • Logging and deforestation for timber and agriculture.
  • Infrastructure development such as road construction and dams.

4. Sundaland (Nicobar Islands)

Location: The Sundaland biodiversity hotspot includes the Nicobar Islands of India.

Significance:

  • The Nicobar Islands are part of the Sundaland hotspot, which is known for its rich marine biodiversity, including coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds.
  • Home to several endemic bird species and marine life.
  • Important for its unique cultural heritage and traditional knowledge systems of indigenous communities.
