Swachh Bharat Mission

Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), also known as the Clean India Mission, is a nationwide cleanliness campaign launched by the Government of India on October 2, 2014. The mission aims to achieve the vision of a ‘Clean India’ by 2nd October 2019, coinciding with the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who is considered the father of the nation and a strong advocate for cleanliness and sanitation.

Key objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission:

Elimination of Open Defecation:

• One of the primary goals of the Swachh Bharat Mission is to eliminate open defecation by constructing toilets in rural and urban areas.
• The mission aims to promote the use of sanitary latrines and discourage the practice of open defecation, which can lead to various health issues and environmental pollution.

Solid Waste Management:

• SBM focuses on effective and sustainable solid waste management practices. This involves proper collection, segregation, transportation, and disposal of solid waste to ensure a clean and healthy environment.
• Encouraging the concept of 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) is a significant aspect of the solid waste management component.

Promoting Hygiene and Cleanliness:

• The mission emphasizes the importance of personal hygiene and cleanliness in daily life. This includes the promotion of handwashing, menstrual hygiene, and overall sanitation practices.
• Behavioural change communication campaigns are conducted to create awareness and sensitize communities about the benefits of maintaining cleanliness.

Construction of Household and Community Toilets:

• SBM focuses on constructing individual household toilets as well as community and public toilets to ensure accessibility to sanitation facilities.
• Financial assistance is provided to eligible beneficiaries to construct toilets, and efforts are made to make India open-defecation free.

Capacity Building and Training:

• The mission involves capacity building and training activities to create a skilled workforce for the effective implementation and sustainability of cleanliness initiatives.
• Local bodies, communities, and organizations are actively involved in planning and executing various aspects of the mission.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in Urban Areas:

• Special emphasis is given to cleanliness in urban areas. The mission aims to make cities and towns cleaner by implementing waste management practices, improving sewage systems, and promoting green spaces.

Technology and Innovation:

• The mission encourages the use of technology and innovation for monitoring and implementing cleanliness initiatives. Mobile applications and online platforms are utilized for reporting and tracking progress.

The Swachh Bharat Mission has witnessed significant progress since its inception, with millions of toilets constructed, open defecation reduced, and increased awareness about sanitation and hygiene. While the mission officially concluded on October 2, 2019, the focus remains on sustaining the achievements and continuing efforts to maintain a clean and healthy environment across the country.
