The Indian Rhino Vision 2020 (IRV 2020) is a collaborative conservation initiative aimed at protecting the Indian rhinoceros population and their habitats. The program was launched in 2005 by the Indian government in partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and other conservation organizations.
Goal: The goal of IRV 2020 is to increase the population of Indian rhinoceros to 3,000 by the year 2020. At the time of the launch of the program, the Indian rhinoceros population had declined to just 2,000 due to habitat loss, poaching, and other factors.
Focus ares: The program focuses on three key areas: protection, rehabilitation, and population management. Under the protection component, IRV 2020 has established new protected areas for Indian rhinoceros and improved the management of existing protected areas to prevent poaching and habitat loss.
Rehabilitation: The rehabilitation component involves the translocation of Indian rhinoceros to new protected areas to establish new populations and reduce the risk of inbreeding. The population management component includes monitoring the Indian rhinoceros population, improving habitat quality, and promoting community-based conservation initiatives.
Conclusion: Thanks to the efforts of the IRV 2020 program, the population of Indian rhinoceros has increased to around 2,600 individuals as of 2021, and the species has been downlisted from endangered to vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. While there is still work to be done to meet the program’s goal of 3,000 individuals, IRV 2020 has been successful in protecting this iconic species and their habitats in India.
